Vintage Burroughs Adding Machine – Series P – Detroit, MI Picture(s) and Description:
This antique Burroughs, Series P, electric adding machine was designed by William Seward Burroughs. He received a patent for his first adding machine on August 21, 1888 and was a founder of American Arithmometer Company. It became Burroughs Corporation and evolved to produce electronic billing machines and mainframes, and eventually merged with Sperry to form Unisys. The grandson of the inventor of these adding machines is Beat author, William S. Burroughs; a collection of his essays is called The Adding Machine. Burroughs built a tremendous number of configurations over the years, all designed around the same basis invention of the first “Portable” adding machine. This particular machine is a Series "P" machine (or "portable", although it weighs approx. 30 lbs!) He made significant changes with the Burroughs adding machines to answer to competition from Victor, American, Barrett, Standard, Universal, Wales, and many other portable machines of the time. It is in working condition but is missing the handle on the side. It is an amazing display piece.
